Online Python Course for Grade 5 and Up
Python is Avatar's first coding course, for students in grade 5 and up with no coding experience. In eight weeks students learn variables, input and output, decisions, loops, lists and functions by writing their own programs, and finish with a game of their own. Classes are live online, interactive and engaging, once a week for 1.5 hours, in a small group of 5 to 6 students, never more than 8, so every student takes part.
About this course
What the Python Course Covers
The course starts with the first program and works up: variables and data types, input and output, decisions with if and else, loops, lists, and functions that package code to use again. Students write every program themselves on their own copy of the lesson code, following the teacher and then experimenting, and each week ends with a small project.
The last weeks bring it together in a game the student designs and builds, with graphics, animation and sound.

What Students Can Do After the Python Course
Write a program from scratch
Open an empty file and write a working Python program that takes input, computes and prints a result.
Decisions and loops
Use variables, if and else, and for and while loops to make a program react and repeat.
Lists and functions
Store data in lists and organise code into functions that can be called again and again.
Build a game
Design and build a small game with graphics, animation and sound, and show it to the class.
Find and fix bugs
Read an error message, test a program a piece at a time, and fix what is wrong.
Think like a programmer
Break a problem into steps before writing code, and explain how a program works.

Questions Parents Ask About the Python Course
Who is the Python course for?
Students in grade 5 and up with no coding experience, or with a little from school. A student should type comfortably and be able to follow a class for an hour and a half. The free assessment helps you choose between Python and Java.
What does my child need?
A laptop or Chromebook with a keyboard, a camera and a microphone, and a quiet place for the class. The teacher sets up the coding tools in the first class; nothing to buy.
How does a live coding class work?
The teacher explains the new idea and demonstrates it; students follow on their own copy of the lesson code, try the same thing and experiment. Then they get an assignment and build it in class and at home. With 5 to 6 students, never more than 8, the teacher sees every screen and every raised hand.
How much homework is there?
A short assignment after each class, finishing the week's project. It is done in the student portal and reviewed by the teacher. Plan on about an hour a week.
What comes after Python?
Java, for grade 7 and up, which builds on the same ideas in a stricter language. One-on-one coding sessions are also available for a student who wants to go further on a project.
