Catching up in math, Grades K to 12

Behind in Math?
A Class to Catch Up

A school classroom has to move at one pace, and a child who misses one step starts missing the next. Avatar teaches live online in groups of up to 8, with a level in every grade for exactly this child: the teacher sees where the work gets stuck and goes over it the same week, the course rebuilds the fundamentals that were missed, and homework is checked the moment it is submitted so a wrong answer is caught tonight, not next Friday.

What it looks like

Falling Behind Looks Different at Every Age

Each of these is a missed step, and each one is fixable in a few months of the right class.

Kindergarten to Grade 3

Counts on fingers for sums they should know by heart. Place value is shaky, so 37 + 25 goes wrong in different ways each time.

Grades 4 and 5

Multiplication facts are not automatic, so long division and fractions, which lean on them, feel impossible. Word problems are skipped.

Grades 6 to 8

Negative numbers, ratios and equations arrive together. A child who was fine in Grade 5 suddenly brings home low scores and says math is stupid.

High school

Algebra 1 or Geometry is going badly because earlier gaps were never closed. The test is in two weeks and the tutor is only patching tonight's homework.

The catching-up level

A Class Built for the Child Who Is Behind

Every Avatar grade runs at three levels, and one of them is for catching up. The class covers the same grade as school, but it starts by rebuilding the fundamentals the child missed and moves at the pace of the group, not of a calendar.

  • Up to 8 students, so the teacher sees every child's work during class and goes over a stuck problem the same week.
  • Homework checked the moment it is submitted. A wrong box turns pink, the student fixes it and tries again.
  • A raised hand on any problem. The teacher opens the next class with the problems students flagged.
  • The same teacher all year, who knows what your child found hard in October when it comes back in March.
  • Our own curriculum, generally aligned with what schools cover, so what is learned here shows up in schoolwork.

Grades K to 3 meet twice a week for an hour, grade 4 and up once a week for two hours, after school, in the evenings or on weekends, Eastern Time.

For parents

You Will See the Scores Climb

Every parent gets their own portal. Nothing waits for a report card.

Tonight's homework, graded tonight

Each week's score appears the moment your child checks the answers, with the time the work took.

The problems they asked about

You see which questions your child raised a hand on, so you know what the teacher will cover next.

Attendance and quizzes

Every class attended, every quiz result, week by week, for every child in the family under one login.

A trend, not a snapshot

Scores week by week show whether a topic is fixed or still wobbling, long before a school test says so.

The Gap Does Not Close on Its Own

A missed step in Grade 4 becomes a bad year in Grade 6 and a dropped math class in high school. The fix is small and early: a class at the right level, a teacher who notices, and homework that answers back.

Questions

What Parents of a Struggling Child Ask

My child is a full year behind. Is a grade-level class right?

The assessment decides. If the gaps are in the current grade, the catching-up level of that grade rebuilds them. If they go further back, we recommend the course that fits, and a child can move up a level during the year when ready.

How is this different from a tutor?

A tutor patches tonight's homework. An Avatar course covers the whole year in order, so the gaps get closed rather than worked around, and the same teacher follows your child through all 34 weeks.

How soon will we see a change?

The parent portal shows every homework score, so you see the first topics being fixed within weeks. School grades follow once the school reaches the same topics.

How much homework is there?

One set a week, done in the student portal and checked as it is submitted. Plan on about 45 to 60 minutes for an older child, less for the younger grades.

What does it cost?

A flat fee per course, by term. See Plans and Pricing. The placement assessment is free.
