Online Pre-Calculus Course | Live, two hours a week
Online Pre-Calculus Course for Grades 10 to 12
Pre-Calculus is for students in grade 10, 11 or 12 who have completed Algebra 2. It covers functions and their graphs, polynomial, rational, exponential and logarithmic functions, trigonometry and its identities, vectors, sequences and series, conic sections and an introduction to limits, so a student starts Calculus ready. Classes are live online, interactive and engaging, once a week for two hours, in a small group of 5 to 6 students, never more than 8, so every student takes part.
About this course
What Pre-Calculus at Avatar Covers
Pre-Calculus begins with a review of functions: domain and range, composition, inverses and transformations. It then takes each family of functions in turn: polynomial and rational functions and their graphs, exponential and logarithmic functions, and the trigonometric functions on the unit circle, with identities, equations and the Laws of Sines and Cosines.
The last part of the year covers vectors and polar coordinates, sequences and series, conic sections, and the idea of a limit, which is the doorway to Calculus.

What Students Can Do After Pre-Calculus
Functions
Find domain and range, compose and invert functions, and transform their graphs.
Polynomial and rational functions
Find zeros, asymptotes and end behaviour, and sketch the graph from the equation.
Exponential and logarithmic
Solve exponential and logarithmic equations and model growth and decay.
Trigonometry
Use the unit circle, graph the trigonometric functions, prove identities and solve triangles and trigonometric equations.
Vectors and polar coordinates
Add and scale vectors, find dot products, and convert between rectangular and polar forms.
Sequences, series and limits
Work with arithmetic and geometric sequences and their sums, and find limits of sequences and functions.
Three levels, same syllabus
Which Pre-Calculus Class Is Right for Your Child?
All three levels follow the same units, so a student can move between them during the year. The difference is pace, depth and how much practice each topic gets.
Catching up
For students who arrive with gaps from Algebra 2. Functions and trigonometry get more time and more practice before the harder topics.
Building skills
For students doing fine in school who want stronger grades and real understanding. The full syllabus at a steady pace.
Advanced
For students ready for a challenge: harder problems, more reasoning about why the methods work, and a longer look at limits.
Placement first
The free assessment places your child. Teachers watch the weekly results and recommend a move up when a student is ready.
Pre-Calculus FAQs
Questions Parents Ask About Pre-Calculus
What grade is Pre-Calculus for?
Most Avatar students take Pre-Calculus in grade 10, 11 or 12, after Algebra 2. The placement assessment confirms readiness. The next step is Calculus, which Avatar offers through one-on-one tutoring.
What does my child need before starting?
A solid Algebra 2: quadratics, polynomials, exponents and logarithms, and the basic trigonometric ratios. The first unit reviews functions before the new material.
How does Pre-Calculus relate to what my child learns in school?
Avatar teaches its own curriculum, generally aligned with what schools cover in Pre-Calculus, so it supports schoolwork. It goes further than the school course, with more problem solving and more practice, and it prepares a student for AP Calculus.
How much homework is there?
One homework set a week, done in the student portal. Each answer is checked as soon as it is submitted, and a wrong answer can be tried again. A student who is stuck can raise a hand, which tells the teacher which problem to go over in the next class. Plan on about 60 to 90 minutes for each set.
How do I follow progress?
The parent portal shows attendance, each week's homework and quiz scores, time spent on the work, and progress over the year, updated in real time.
When does the course start, and can my child join later?
The 34-week year runs from September to June. A student can join during the year after a placement assessment, and the teacher helps them catch up on the weeks they missed.
