How it works

A contest, like in the book

Paper, pencil and the clock. No calculator.

1

Start the clock

Open a contest and press Start. The clock counts down the suggested time; move between problems freely and change answers until you submit.

2

Submit, then read every solution

Your score appears at once, with the correct answer and the book's full worked solution for each problem, often with "Another way" to think about it.

3

Earn medals, watch the record

Gold for 9 or 10, Silver for 7 or 8, Bronze for 5 or 6. Signed in, every score is saved; once a parent adds the contests, the student portal shows the medals and a breakdown by strategy.

Questions

Good to know

Who is this for?

Grades 4 to 6: students who want to try, or train for, math competitions. The problems are of the kind found in popular elementary competitions such as MOEMS, Math Kangaroo and the Noetic Learning contest; no algebra is needed. Grades 6 to 8: the same idea one level up, with ratios, equations and first number theory, the kind of problem found in middle-school competitions such as MOEMS, AMC 8 and MATHCOUNTS.

Are these the problems from the book?

Yes. Each grade band is a two-volume book, Think Like a Math Champion, Grades 4–6 and Grades 6–8: Volume 1 has the 12 strategy lessons and Contests 1 to 10, Volume 2 has Contests 11 to 25. We wrote every problem ourselves and checked every answer.

Is this connected to MOEMS or another competition?

No. Avatar Learning Center is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by MOEMS, Math Kangaroo, the MAA (AMC 8), MATHCOUNTS or any other competition. Their names are mentioned only to describe the kind of problem our contests practice.

Can my child retake a contest?

Yes. Every attempt is saved, and the record keeps the best score and medal for each contest. The solutions are shown after each attempt, so a retake is a review.

Does my child need an account for Contest 1?

No. Anyone can take Contest 1 and see the solutions. A free account saves the score to the record; the other contests are part of the subscription.

How do I cancel?

Anytime: in the student portal, the contests card has "Cancel subscription". Nothing more is charged, the contests stay open until the end of the period you paid for, and the record is kept if you come back later.

Prefer paper?

The same contests are in the Think Like a Math Champion books, two volumes for each grade band: Volume 1 with the 12 strategy lessons and Contests 1–10, Volume 2 with Contests 11–25, every solution in both. Practice on paper, check and track online.
